Kindness: pass it foward?

Most of us have seen those commercials on tv where someone does something nice for one person and somebody who witnesses it then goes on to do something nice for another person and that cycle continues on and on. Or we've heard the theory of passing it on when it comes to favors, where instead of returning a favor to the person who did you one, you do a favor for another person instead to repay the kind act. What are your thoughts on this? Do you practice this yourself? I try to be more aware of how my acts affect others and be kinder in general not just to other people but by being a little bit more earth friendly when I can be too. What if everyone here did something nice for someone else over the next 24 hours. Would it have an impact?
