Can Someone Please Explain Blogging to Me?

Can somebody explain to me what exactly is involved in blogging? And what exactly is a blog? Is it like a diary that you allow people to read? Does a blog need to have a specific subject? Does anyone on here make any significant amout of money by blogging? I have been considering starting a blog on PayPerPost. I have saved the link so that I can sign up later. Can anyone give me any good tips of making a blog profitable?

To smack it right down to the nitty gritty basics, a blog is your own website, where you can make posts. People can post comments to them.
