Does anyone have a recipe for hummingbird nectar? I read somewhere that the red food coloring is not necessary, but the premixed nectar I bought was red. The mix looked much like jello before you mix it with water.

No I don't have any pictures, I stay rushed so much lately I haven't had time. But I will try and make an effort to capture a picture if possible. They are soooo fast. On my front porch, where my feeders hang from, I also have a momma kitty who is raising her 3 babies there also. Whenever I go to open the door to feed and water them, they scatter in all directions. I'm trying to get them to let us pet them, the momma is finally letting us so there is hope. The birds are so fast and tiny.

The honey is not good for them.

The mix that my aunt used was really simple. It consisted of a cup of sugar, a few drops of the red food coloring, and water enough to fill the feeder. Sometimes she would add honey, but I don't think the hummingbirds liked it as well.

Katlady I thank you for sharing with me. I have not known of anyone who used honey before, so I am curious if anyone out there could tell me if the birds like this as well. I have been told that the red food coloring is bad for them. I'm going to try the homemade food now instead of buying the redimix stuff. It's exspensive and doesn't go very far. My birds drink the stuff gone in no time.

I was told by an elderly lady from town that the red nector you buy isn't all that great for hummingbirds and she told me whatever you do do not use food color because the eggs won't hatch. I don't know how much this old girl knows but I have been at her place many times and she has enough hummingbirds to keep three feeders busy all the time, it's something to see and all she does is mix sugar and water and the hummingbirds love it. I'd just like to know how do you get the hummingbirds in the first place. I'm having bad luck with that and I think it's due to the fact I don't have trees ???

I don't know what attracts them exactly, I do have hanging flower baskets all over my porch though. They love the flowers too. Just try hanging a feeder for the hummingbirds and give it a week and see if they come. Thank you so much for the recipe and the tip about the food coloring. Good luck with your birds too!

my dear friend keeps hummingbird feeders about her patio and there are so many hummingbirds coming and going I doubt we could count them, she never puts red coloring in her feeders just uses the basic sugar and water recipe. She has 4 feeders currently, and they all have perches on them - it is interesting because of the perches the birds will actually set to take the "nectar" one day her granddaughter was out on the patio and a hummingbird came into her hand. such a thrill.

Thank you Modestah for sharing with me. I would have loved to see the hummingbird come to someone's hand like that. I've never seen that. They are sooo fast and seem to fight with one another, aggressive little creatures. I have 2 feeders. I was wondering if I had more feeders if more birds would come. Have a great week!!

The mix I have made is one cup sugar to two cups of water. It is half of sugar to water. You are correct you do not need the food coloring, but it is the brightly colored floweres that attract the humming birds to them in the first place. I have a green whirly gig hanging in my yard and the humming birds like that. So I think it is any bright color. Good luck.

Thank you for sharing this information with me. I was wondering just what attracted them. And why the red. I have a blue glass feeder that they come to as well. I am not going to use the food coloring, so it will be interesting to see if they come to it as often with clear liquid in the feeders. Have a great week!

You probably already have the recipe as I did not check to see if someone already answere you but here it is. I think this is right. Two cups of water, heat until boiling, then add 2 tablespoons of sugar and let sugar cook into the water. Cool to room temperature and then fill your feeder. We have been doing this for years and we always get hummingbirds eating at our feeder.

Thanks spitfire for providing me with the first recipe. My hummingbirds are so pretty and they are swarming my porch now, I have 2 feeders out and I can't remember having this many in our area before. I guess they like the food. I am going to mix up some and keep it in the fridge so all I have to do is let it get room temp. and refill the feeders.

I just boil water and put lots of sugar in it. No need for food coloring. It is put in a red feeder. Hummingbirds can only see Red (what what I have read) So that is why they put it in a red feeder. Good luck. I love my little birds.

Thanks udderones for the recipe. I too love my hummingbirds. We watched the other day, 2 of them were fighting with each other and they carried it all the way up to the 2nd story of the house and over the top. They are greedy little birds aren't they? I have one feeder that is a blue glass ball, but they go to the newer one first, it has red on it.
