In my opinion it can be none other than Stephen King. Just look at how many bestsellers he has and how many movies have been made about his books.

I think this is a very difficult question to answer. My favourites are probably Emily Bronte and George Orwell. I also enjoy Ian McQewan and JK Rowling very much. I think the answer very much depends who you are and what your taste is.
