Has anyone bought an unlocked phone off of ebay?? Do you recommend that?

I want to upgrade to a PDA. I have a tmobile phone but I don't know if I want to sign another contract. A friend and I were talking and he suggested to buy a phone off ebay that was unlocked. Does anyone have experience with this??
