buying a new car

I will soon be buying a new car, but how do I know which is the best small car. What should I watch for and how do I know the salesman is being honest with me. Even new cars can be lemons so how on earth do I avoid getting caught out? I am looking at a small 2 door hatch, like the Yaris or Ford fiesta. Who can help me?
