I bought new Ram and now the old ram doesn't work...

I just recently bought 2 sticks of 256mb Ram. I need to have 2 sticks of the same Ram to run it. I wanted to upgrade from 512 to 1gig so I have a total of four 256. I put in the new stuff with the old, and it didnt turn on.
So I put in the old stuff like it was before, and now that won't work either.
Nothing I have tried works, I have tried all the slots.
Any suggestions?

try resetting your bios, then add your new ram 1st by itself. some ram will not work with others, most ram requires a match set, not the brand name just the speed, IE, pc3200, pc6400 ect.
