Medication - Three times daily?

When you have to take medication 3 times daily, do you really take it every 8 hrs or do you take it in the morning, at lunch time and at night before you go to bed? I've always wondered if it was ok to do the latter, but I have never tried. I always think you should keep the 8 hr wait strictly....but I sometimes wonder if it's really that important. Mostly it's a pain when I have to take medication with food, because then I have to have a meal first, and if the supposed time I'm due to take a pill is not at a real meal time then that does not work out so well...and I wonder how much do I have to eat for it to be enough!
