What's the best ever movie soundtrack?

July 28, 2007 9:02am CST
It's a simple question, so let's have lots of nominations! It may be a specially composed soundtrack, or possibly a Tarantino-esque compilation. Film music can be evocative, moving and absolutely brilliant - much of the time we don't even notice it's there. So what in your opinion, is the best ever movie music? And would you have liked it so much if you'd heard it first out of the context of the film it was for?

Of course it's impossible to name just one... but I remember some extraordinary: The Third Man - Harry Lime Theme The Bridge of the River Kwai - March Casablanca - As Time Goes By Theme Clockwork Orange - Beethoven 9th and the alltime first runner: 2001: A Space Odyssee - Introduction (Thus spoke Zarathustra) and space ships' The Blue Danube Waltz

All very good choices there! And did you know that Herb Alpert did a Mariachi version of the Harry Lime theme? Whilst obviously not being as good as the original, it's still rather amusing and fun! Thanks for your contribution.

Blasphemy - I have seen (and heard) the future, and it is Mariachi. Even in Manchester UK, we have a travelling band of busking Mariachi musicians! Viva Mariachi!

LOL! My apologies - Mariachi is a fine style of music, although an acquired taste to some people. However, as my comments seem to have been offensive, I hereby retract any slur which might be read into my words on Mariachi. All the best LOL

Celine Dions' sound track in the Titanic is just the greatest and the most befitting of the scenes!

There are many people who share your opinion on this, academic2. Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" is certainly loved by many people, especially those who enjoyed the film. I can't say that I share your enjoyment of this song, and I'm not a fan of Celine Dion's music, but she is and that film is, very popular and successful, and musical taste varies a lot from person to person. It's great that you get such enjoyment from this song in the soundtrack, and I hope you continue to enjoy it for many years to come! All the best, and thanks for your response!!

Celine once represented Switzerland in the Eurovision Song Contest! And unlike her fellow Canadians, Katrina & the WAves (who represented the UK with their magnificent 'Love Shine A Light') didn't win.

I'm caught between two chairs on this issue. It would be either, Zbiegniew Preisners 'Van Budenmayer' music used in Kieslowskis 'Double Life of Veronique', or Ennio Morricones 'Sonnore Colonnare' from 'Cinema Paradiso'. Both very emotive pieces, and great films.

Bravo! Excellent choices there on both counts. Preisner and Morricone are two of the best film composers around nowadays, and I'd be hard-pushed to decide which of them is better. So a joint first-place is probably a wise decision! Thanks for your response (and comments to other responses), and all the best :-)

I've not seen either of those films, but Nina Simone's music is fantastic, so that was a good choice by the music director! Thanks for your response.

Requiem For a Dream has an amazing soundtrack, as does Cold Mountain and O Brother Where Art Thou?

Thanks for your recommendations there jajunk. I've not seen any of those films, but I'll take your word for it. What is it that makes these soundtracks the best ever, in your opinion?

Well, I'm happy for you that you enjoy music, but that wasn't really what this discussion topic was about. I think you'll find that most people enjoy music - it's an inherant part of nature that people enjoy at least one kind of music, in my experience. So, as I say, it's good that you enjoy music, but I was really asking what your favourite piece of film music is. This could be because it works so well in the film, or because you just really like the particular piece of music.
