cheerleading originated in the united states.its roots go back to the honor societies and fraternities formed on U.S...college campuses in the late 1700's. member of such groups wrote songs and rhymes to express their pride in their clubs and schools. when college football began in the late 1800's, each colleges clubs sat together at games and competed against one another for attention and support. their songs and rhymes formed the beginnings of traditional yells or cheers, some of which are still used today. the initial of cheerleading was almost exclusively an all male activity among the colleges of the original big ten inter collegiate athletic conference in the mid west. by the early 1900's it had spread to almost all u.s. universities and colleges and some in canada and into some high schools. during world war 1,when much of americas male population was fighting overseas, females students began to dominate cheerleading activities. with the exeption of college sports, were cheerleadings squads usually have equal numbers of male and female cheerleaders, these trend continues today. because of theie high visibility at sporting events on national television, adult, professional cheerleaders have brought widespread attention to all forms of this popular activity period.
