Someone may have already answered this, but when you're a freelance writer, or a freelance anything like me a freelance photographer, it means you don't work under a contact for a specific company. For instance you might be a writer for a newspaper...but then you're not freelancing..freelancing means you will write for anyone, for any magazine, newspaper and "hopefully" get your writing published...also, since so many people here write for gather.com, associated content, helium they, and you can be considered freelancing,...you're not under any contract as a writer Freelancing can be great specifically since you aren't under a contract for a specific company or firm to write to...although can be harder as you have to make the rounds with your writing and keep your fingers crossed that you'll be published--but it does mean you can write for anyone and everyone.

Freelance writing to my understanding is the writing of article that you then attempt to sell to magazines o newspapers...you would not be guaranteed any bnefits because you would not be employed by thee places but an indepedent contractor.... Hope that this is helpful to you, my friend.

Freelance writing is writing, not just for one company, but any company or publisher who will buy your writing, like the Hub, Associated Content, magazines, etc. You can get Writers Digest and see what magazines want someone to write for them. You then find out their guidelines, and then you write an article, you send then a query letter to find out if they are interested in, lets say, "HOmeschooling Benefits or Not" to a magazine that is for homeschoolers, and they write back that they either are interested or not and then you send in the article and if it is accepted, they pay you. Oh and either get a copy of Writers Digest or subscribe to it. That is how I learned much about writing for publication.
