Pretty simple question, but do any of you know the difference between people who are "Emo" and people who are "Goth"? Most people do not know the difference, and I am wondering if other one here know what it is?

goth is a darker version of emo, emo is short for emotional, so they are dramafied and so sad about the world (think uber wussie man) goth are just gothic and into the dark side, not necessarily wussified

Exactly, Goth is not weak, Emo is very weak and emotional.

An infamous song once said that Emo is just a cheap imitation of Goth. And... I sort of agree. I guess they're sort of similar, except with Emo, the fashion is not as interesting, and there's a lot more crying.

I have to agree in a way. Emo to me seems more depressing than Goth.

Emos Hate themselves Goths hate Everyone Emos Want to Kill themselves Goths Want to kill Everyone Goth was originally a term used to describe people with a taste for certain bands eg: Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, etc. in the '80s when punk started to fade out, and with wardrobes predominantly black. Many goths have a cynical outlook on society and will laugh at others, and at themselves in a healthy way. Goths don't usually care what other people think of them, and don't care if they don't fit in. Emos are group of teenagers who feel like loners, outcasts and rejects. People automatically presume emo kids cut and are depressed living in a world of self pity. they have unwashed black/dark brown chin length hair with a swoop. sweaters, tight jeans, scarves, everything vintage. permanent look of "I'm sad and no one understands me" on face.

"Emos Hate themselves Goths hate Everyone Emos Want to Kill themselves Goths Want to kill Everyone " I gotta tell ya, that is so annoying when ppl do that....cause in all reality its so off the mark its not even funny ya know...However you are right that Goth is seemingly post punk (its actually considerably older than that though) but I wouldnt say goth are cynical ppl at all (of course there are some but I mean you'll find that in any stereotype really)..I think we just see the world, life, ppl etc etc in a far deeper and broader way than your average bear ya know, its not that we are cynical at all...I also think that Emo is a newer less accurate somewhat wanna be version of 80s Goth but I have to say that both are seriously misunderstood...

wow.. that is one of the worst definitions of goth and emo I have seen yet... congrats. Hazzy was correct on the attitude most gothics and emos have. Since when do gothic people "purely" love rock? Have you even been to a club that blasts EBM and Synth-pop? If you have than you would undoubtly realize that the dancers there are.. DUN DUN DUN. Gothic. (as well as rivitheads, and any industrial lover, label or not) EMO IS NOT GOTH. That is like saying GOTH IS PUNK. Ehhhh Wrong people. Also, EMO is Far from PUNK. If a punk ever heard you say that, I hope you enjoy a nice curb-stomping with a side of kidney failure. Goth is described well in the book "WHAT IS GOTH?" by the artist Voltaire. In it he tells what goth is as well as pokes fun at it. Hell, it's what we do best. Besides if you can't make fun of yourself, than how can you make fun of anything else and not be a hypocrite. Now Emo is said to be derived from a Music style called Emotional Hardcore which is a branch off of SCREAMO, (so has been said) but the singer has a "whiny" sounding voice. Goth's musical derivative was that of a different rock sound, Though the difference is it was and still is VERY POLITICAL (like punk was, hence why goth was a branch off of punk). Emo or "scene" is more of a fashion. Goth is a way of life or a way of thinking. Anyone who thinks just because you wear black all the time or listen to Sisters of Mercy or Bauhaus makes them goth, needs to play in oncoming traffic and save themselves being ridiculed. There is a group of people that are known as "Perky Goths". This group of goth is hardly ever seen wearing black, since they enjoy bright colors and are more outgoing than the other types of goths. On another note, goths and emo's really do not get along. For one, Goth has always had the stereotype of "Woe is me" and it's pure bullcrap. That is why most people think EMO came from GOTH though. However, The people who act like that and claim to be goth are then outcast from any goth group and often shunned. The "Mopey goths, Mall Goths, and Week-end Goths" are a joke among the other goth styles and are hated as much as Emo's are. One reason why Goths(as well as other labels) hate emo's is because who wants to be around someone that leads a normal life yet they cry over spilled milk? Emo did not spawn from goth. Plain and simple.

i'm sorry if i offended anyone from the first comment i made on this discussion. thankfully some one kindly corrected me. To me goth is someone not to fit a mold, not to join a trend, not to follow a crowd, but because it's right for them. this is the essence of goth. and if i said that wrong to tell me. the person that corrected me was right in everything he said. oh and sorry again, my 1st comment sounded way to stereotypical.

This is both a trend and a way of living for some people. I do not think that you really offended anyone.

I created this discussion for that exact reason, people have no idea what is "Goth" and what is "Emo". Like me, for example, I wear a lot of black sometimes, but I am neither "Goth" nor "Emo", why? Well, most of my shirts are not pure black for one thing, majority of all my shirts are comic book and sci-fi related, I also wear glasses, and I play RPGs, so you now know, automatically, that I am a "Geek" (and proud of it). I know that labels are lame, but everyone seems to have one or has one thrown on them from the minute they get into middle school or high school, and a lot of labels can stick with you for life. I have many friends, and myself included, who have not grown out of those labels, so "Goth" and "Emo" are two of the labels that are rather current these days, so I wonder if people know about these labels. Of course "Goth" has been around for quite along time, but "Emo" is fairly new. By the way, Pon and Zi are very cute. I have seen them at Hot Topic quite often.
