What is the purpose of lovebugs?!

This is really killing me. I spend 2 years in Colorado, and then move to Florida only to find these small pesky bugs floating around everywhere and reproducing. What the heck is the purpose of these things? They are impossible to wash off my car and nothing even eats them! We're all going to be in trouble one day when we find out they actually carry some unknown disease...
