Do you unplug your broadband modem and computer when it rains?

Last week it rained hard for three days. And, while I kept my computer unplugged throughout the storms, I forgot to disconnect my cable modem cord from the wall. And, for almost a week afterwards, my broadband connection was extremely random and my external modem didn't want to work. Some days I could get broadband and on others my connection wouldn't come up at all. So, today when it started raining again, I made sure to unplug everything from the electrical outlets, and disconnect my broadband cable cord as well. As soon as the storm passed, I had no problem at all getting the broadband modem to make a connection to the online world. And, I was wondering if anyone else has found this to be a problem as well. Do you find that your broadband gets cranky if you don't unplug it during a rain storm? Do you always unplug your computer when it rains?

Good to hear that things worked out for you. Our cable company/broadband provider was going to send someone out to take a look at the modem, but then the thing magically fixed itself. We just unplugged it and the next morning it booted up. So, we called them and canceled the appointment and later that afternoon and evening the broadband went out again! Really bad timing. But, it's all better now, I think! Or, at least I hope. We haven't had problems with it in awhile. But, I am always super careful now ever since.

Dear beautyqueen26, In case I am not going to work for another 1 or 2 hours, I used to switch off every electric connection to my computer, modem etc., My daughter also does the same thing. I made to habit to do that because I have the habit of forgetting thing. Therefore, I made a habit. Of course my computer and other items such as printer, modem, ups are kept in the secured place. No rain or other external things will affect my computer. I did not face any erratic problem with my modem even though I had worked during the heavy rainy day.

When a thunderstorm comes through, I shut my computer off. I have it connected through a battery backup and surge suppression power strips, so I don't unplug them. I've never thought about unplugging my cable modem. That is probably a good idea. Once in a while I have to unplug it just to reset it. Maybe that is my problem!

Maybe I have been lucky, but I never unplug any of it during a rain storm and I haven't had any problems. I have a good surge protector on most of my computer equipment that is supposed to protect it from lightening also. I have a cable modem and the cable wires even run across the flat roof of my house from the junction box on one side to the wall on the other side were they go through to the cable outlet on the wall. Not only do I not unplug it, but I usually fo on and use it during a rainstorm.
