Why are we so interested in disasters?

Is it just the news media, or are we really that interested in disasaters and devastation? I'm thinking of the recent coverage of the bridge collapse and the trapped miner's. I feel for the victims and their families, but do we really need to see their grief on national television? And why do we want to?

Well people grief for a reason and that reason is because they lost something or someone that meant alot to them.. People doing in on national tv is no different than you doing it right at your own home.. Yeah everyone in the world can see you do it, but if you don't grief about things it will only make you feel worse.. I don't find it wrong in anyway.. Why are people interested in disasters my thought is because these are our people we care and if we didn't we wouldn't be watching and praying for them at least that's what I think!

Thanks for the response - I liked the part about caring and praying for the victims. I do care, but sometimes feel like I'm intruding on something that should be private.
