I highly recommend Cakewalk Sonar. You can get a basic 'Home' version very cheaply, 'Home XL' if you want some added virtual instruments and effects, or 'Studio' or 'Producer' editions if you want more powerful tools at your fingertips. Cakewalk only runs under Windows. It's very user friendly and easy to learn. For more info see www.cakewalk.com There are several alternatives you might be interested in, like Cubase and Logic, but in my opinion these are far harder to learn. I think there is a demo of Cakewalk Sonar on the web site. Good luck!
