Why, when there is suffering, do we question the existance of God?

Why do we hold God, if He exists, responsible for suffering? Why do we assume that a just God would keep things like 9/11 from happening? Are we right to expect Him to protect us from evil, to NOT allow suffering? What have we ever done for Him???? Isn't most pain and suffering the result of our own action or lack of it?

I don't hold God responsible for what we mortals have caused. My father (an agnostic) would always say to me that if "my" God were so great, why do people suffer and why do we have wars and why are people starving? He could just make it better but he doesn't. It used to confuse me as a kid (with a devout Christian mother) because I did wonder that. I mean, just make it all better! As I matured, I realized that things that happen here are a result of our actions. No, not every single thing, like someone who gets cancer who never had a dirty or bad lifestyle. But most things - wars, groups of people suffering, even outbreaks of diseases - are the fault of humans. And we have to try to right our wrongs. As for why some good people suffer so badly from illness and die early, I can only believe that they go to a better place and no one knows when the time, place, or circumstances will be, but it will happen to us all. We are here for a short time then gone. I think God has done all He needs to do and now it is up to us to get things right and to fix the wrongs we have caused. By the very nature of human beings, that will never happen, but it is always nice to see people trying and working to help others and extending a hand to those who need one. You ask such tough questions. All I ask is if you can hear what you think! lol.

when we experience suffering, that's the time taht God's presence is strongest...why, when most of us are happy,we forget Him...most people only remember God when they're in trouble or are having life crises..

That's true, what you say. The great thing about God is, He comforts us in our troubles, even though we ignore Him during the good times. How many humans can we say that about?

We hold God responsible because He is all-powerful, and we can't understand, as humans, why he doesn't intervene on our behaf. The reason why God does not intervene is bcause after Noah's Ark He made a covenant that he would not intervene, and that it was up to us. He will help and guide us, but ultimately, we are allowed to decide for ourselves. He has given us the world.

Actually, after the Flood, God simply said he would never destroy the earth by flood again. He continued to intervene when He chose and still does. We want freewill, but when things go badly, we blame God. How narcissistic is that? Thanks for responding.
