Any ideas on how to train our dog?

We have a 1 yr old daschund and he's driving us crazy. I'm not sure if it's his age but some of his habits are going to get him sent to another home if we can't find a way to train him not to do it. Here are the things he does. He bites our children. I was told to gently hold him down to the floor until he acts calm when he tries to bite or nip at the kids. The problem is he never calms down. It could be 5 minutes and he will squiggle and squirm the whole time so that's not working. He chews everything in sight. He's eaten so many things that I never thought you could eat and it's driving me crazy. We try to keep things off the floor and out of his way but he's learned how to climb onto one thing then another and get up on to places that we thought were way out of his reach (let's face it he's a pretty small dog). He can't be trusted to be left in the house he chews our clothes, the bottom of the couch, the curtains it's out of control. He barks constantly. It's a high pitched yipping bark that goes right through me. I would be able to leave him out in the backyard (it's fenced in) if he would just be quiet. He will go out there and behave only if we're out there with him. If he's by himself he just barks and barks. We thought he was lonely and put him with his brother out in the backyard (my friend owns his brother) and left them out there and he barked more! My husband is getting very tired of it. Is this just left over puppy behavior or do you think this will continue longer than that? What can we do with him? We can't do an obedience school I can't make it a the only time they offer it (we live in a small town). Is there anything we can do at home to make things better. My husband and I have both had dogs before but never one that did so many things like this. He's making us very unhappy. Thanks

Well first off I'm sorry that your going through this. Bringing a dog into the family should be a happy occasion.Well when I was a kid my neighbor owned two daschund's a mother and daughter. Those two dogs drove us crazy.Always barking and both mean.So it must be the nature of the dog.Did you try Petco or Petsmart they both offer classes for dogs.I hope that it all works out.

I didn't think of going to the pet stores for classes I will have to check that out. I agree that dogs should be a happy thing in your life and unfortunately he's driving us nuts. I'm really hoping that it's just because he's young and he'll grow out of it. Can you tell that I'm trying to be optimistic? LOL. Thanks for your reply.

The behavior you describe is usually a result of bordom and excess energy. This can happen with any breed of dog. How often do you walk your dog? Try to find an off-leash park nearby and take your dog there daily. If you can't do that take your dog for an hour long walk at least once a day. Try this for one week and I guarantee youi will have a much better behaved dog.
