Why are kittens so cute?

We have an outdoor female cat that just gave birth to a litter of kittens about four or five weeks ago. And, they are simply precious. One is gray and white with markings, and the other one is orange and white. And, they live behind the bush in our front yard. That's where their mom stashes them whenever she goes off hunting. Today I opened the door to give her a little bit of food so that she didn't have to leave her babies and there they were on the lawn, running and playing. And, I was so tempted to pick them up. I am not sure if they are weaned yet, so I did not want to interfere and then have the mom abandon them. The bad thing about it is, that I've had two kittens that grew up to full size adult cats and they stop being adorable after a certain age. For instance my big cat, Big man is his name, used to play bite my big toe when he was a baby. Well, that got real painful when he developed fangs! And, my baby cat, EB, (who is seven years old now, but she's still my baby) used to lounge on my tummy all day long when she was a kitten. Now when she does that, it feels like a ten ton weight is sitting on me. Not so cute! But I still love both of my cats. So, does anyone know why kittens are so cute? Do you think that cat moms notice how adorable their own babies are and experience some type of motherly pride? Do you remember when your own kittens stopped being cute and just started being annoying?

hi beautyqueen26,what i think about this universal fact is most of us like animals that are small in size..here by like i actually mean cute as you mentioned in your discussion heading..so as we like our own babies{i don't have any..;-)}we tend to like our pets babies to because they are smaller, feeble and so young kidlings..they look innocent from their faces adding to their cuteness..so we naturally feel attracted towards them as to protect them and have sympathy and kindness for them..in short we adore them..so when you saw the litter from your female cat you found them very cute because of both 'naturally attracted' due to their innocent and adorable looks as i explained you earlier as well as they belong to your own pet so adding more attraction and attachment towards them ..well i cant write more explaining the cause of their cuteness because i just love them and adore them a lot too..so i was waiting for my reasoning to end so that i can say..THEY ARREEEEEEE SOOOOOOO CUTEEEEEE...I JUST LOVE THEM..(*shouting*)...phewwwww..thank God ..i let it out...i am gonna see my cat now...cutieeeeeee..oopsss..bbyee..have a nice time..

They are cute because they are babies- Most babies are—a lot of animals are like that- Kittens are so cuddly I even think puppies are adorable- How sad that these kittens are outside though- : ( Is the mama cat your cat?? Or just a stray that sticks around?

I think kittens, and puppies alike, are so cute b/c it makes it easier to find them homes LOL I think mama cats have alot of motherly instincts based on the amount of cleaning, watching and protecting they do of their babies. Our Morgana is still cute but annoying too. I know what you mean about the ten pound weight too...she is one heavy cat. She also likes to bite since we had her declawed. Have a great day!!
