Why is Santa Claus so old?

Here's a question that I've always wondered, but never found a creative answer for. Why is Santa Claus so old? If Santa Claus were real, wouldn't he be ageless? Wouldn't he be a timeless being for the ages delivering gifts to children around the world, year after year? And, you'd need to be young to accomplish so much in so little time. Why would Santa be so old and if he looked younger, would we recognize him? That is, assuming Santa were real.
