Is "rainwater" really the better water for plants?

i've heard of this myth for a long time from my grandparents. How many of us put buckets outside right before it rains, so that we can keep the rainwater for our houseplants? I do this, but does anyone has proof that it really makes their plants do better? Am i just wasting my time trying to collect water?
