I have been trying to give my recently Birthday celebrated one year old, food that needs some chewing but he insists on just keeping it in his mouth without trying to chew it up. Worse still, he always keeps looking down however much I try to distract him to look up and so the food in his mouth keeps dripping down. I am at a loss to make him understand that he has got to chew the food. Any suggestions please?

I really don't know what to suggest here, my daughter is now 14 months, almost 15 & she's been on solids for quite some time now - she's always just chewed! She only has front teeth though, so her food just goes mushy in her mouth coz there aren't any teeth to chew with back there but it should just be a natural thing. Have you spoken to your paediatrician to see why he's not chewing? I'm not a Dr or anything & only have 1 child but still, from what i have noticed with my daughter, it came to her naturally as soon as anything solid went in her mouth. Good Luck though!

Yeah... I know it comes naturally. He was doing good at chewing a few weeks back, but I don't know what's wrong all of a sudden that he doesn't want to chew now. But anything he finds on the ground he goes for a dash at it and tries to chews it with his front teeth... Toddlers!!!

Try using the step three baby foods. They have chuncks in them but are very soft. When you give him a bite do the chewing motion with your mouth.Hold the bowl in your hands so he has to look at you. Eventually he will catch on. Just be patient.
