One simple question here all. What consitutes a "hot topic of the day" discussion? Either tell me what YOU feel it is or what mylot feels it is. I have had a few of mine appear there in the past and just recently. It is a great feeling seeing one of your own discussions make it to the "supposed" top. I've seen some with hundreds of responses show up on the list. I've also seen some with a few responses show up. So what does it consist of to be on this list I wonder?

I've started about 20 discussions( includes 2 deleted for no crime) so far and almost 17 ( as i've observed) have entered the first 10 of the Hots list, with me topping the list majority of the times.
HOTs list is nothing but the sum total of the number of responses and the number of comments.
If your number of responses + number of comments = more than that of any user's, then you'll likely be the number 1 in the Top 10 HOT discussions.
Say, you have just 5 responses, but 500 comments on it. Then you have the best chance to beocme the Top position in the first page of the HOTS list.
Same would be the fate if you have 100 responses and 0 comments, you'll still be having a great chance of being on top of it.
I'm not sure whether it is decided on the comments and responses by 50:50 ratio, but i'm fully sure that the number of comments and number of responses are the 2 major parameters that play a role in deciding your position in hot topics.
I think i'll link you to one of the discussions where i have made it more clear, i even consulted some of the popular members about it before penning down the below response. Also i did a lot of observation on that and could conclude something.

One point i've missed to include is, it takes a minimum of 2 hours to enter the HOTs list, from the time you post your discussion.
I'm glad that you are hitting the HOTs frequently, you are a funny man and its interesting to read of your life stories. Congrats for that, and thanks for sharing your happiness with us.

Tjhat's an interesting theory of how it works. I'll have to compare this some day when I have the time and am bored. Thanks and I'll check the linked discussion you have as well.

Well my latest "hot topic" lasted maybe 30 minutes in the list only even though there were a lot of comments etc and responses going on for some time. Oh well. Dunno about that part now. HAHA! thanks again.

See, i can give two reasons for that;
1) The discussion must have reached the 24 hours time limit. Any topic which is more than 24 hours old cannot be a part of HOTs list. It will be automatically removed, it can never make a re-entry.
2) If you are sure that your topic is not more than 24 hours old, then this point holds good. your discussion might have been pushed back by other Hot discussions. So it must have been pushed back from first page to second or third or even back further. It happens on the days of severe competition.
Just check soon and let me know, i'm quite sure it'll be due to one of the above two mentioned reasons.

I am not sure actually, I kinda wish i knew.. I think maybe it might be a subject that points out more.. I had one there about a week ago. It was nice to see it there but i though i only a few replies how can it be.. So really i am not sure.. Hopefully someone has some sort of answer to your question cause i know i don't!!

I will and thanks I didn't read any of the post I just did a e-mail reply to the subject... Sometimes though i do go back and read what other's have to say I just didn't this time.. it's late and i should be in bed...lol Happy posting!!!

Read the 2nd respionse here. This about covers it all as far as I can tell. I had 2 in the top 3 today for a few hours straight and it all fit the criteria mentione in #2 response. Have a great one today also.

Well, i think your discussion must have lots of comments, it should be really interesting topic to get a lot of viewers that interest the people to put their responses. How's that?

At the time I am commenting here I have 2 in the list now.
Both in the top ten also. And it feels wonderful. Almost
privalged feeling. Superb. Excellent. And other many great
feelings with this accomplishment. Thanks.

I honestly have no clue! I have never really paid attention to that before. I dont even know if I have had one of mine there or not.

I think it is the ones that were most recently responded to. Because like you say some with 100 responses and some with only a few. But that is just my theory LOL!

It has to be more than that as I have had many with a lot of responses in a short time frame and they never made the list. Hmmm?
