unbearable girl at work

we have this new temp at work, we just hired her to cover for the receptionist who was away for a week.
OMG was she annoying. Every time we started up a discussion, she does everything she could to do bend the discussion make in her direction and make some comment on how wonderful/brilliant/experienced she is.
but the lame part is that she's not really all that great.
once, she was commenting that
'yeah, oh gosh, was i a nerd when i was in high school. i mean, how else do you think i got 94.00 in my HSC?' (the HSC is the australian version of the general university entrance exam)
i almost laughed in her face! it was all i could do to hold myself back from saying
'errr.... i was never remotely considered a nerd at school, i even came in WAY below class average in the HSC and i still got 97.50; how u managed to get 94.00 and still be considered a nerd is beyond me.'

What should we do for that? It always happens around us and I think we can't avoid it because we are just one of the member of the society and we have to study, work and live with many people who have different character, growth experience and education background. Some may be kind and friendly but some may not. What should we do was just get well along with others but maybe not everyone think so. So don't concern it if we find it's difficult to get along with him/her.

There are such persons in world who would try to prove themselves superior and she might be one of them. If you don't like her discussions then just ignore them.

don't mind her, she just want to get your attention. maybe she's saying and doing that because she's aiming for a permanent position at your work.you'll just get irritated when you give her the attention.
