Are career websites and headhunters a good idea?

It has been a month now since I started looking for work. I've been off for 2 years now so I started with career websites like Hotjobs and Monster. Most of the positions I wanted required that I go through search firms. I just noticed that they all just seem to want to talk first but the placements are slow in coming. One even discouraged me from going to more than 1 search firm because they might submit my resume to the same company and it'll look bad for me. Is this true? Also, they mentioned that applying online might be a bad idea because it all just goes to this inbox or fax machine that no one really pays attention to. Is this also true? What is the best way to apply with a company?

I actually never sed them but I signed up in two of them and i was getting all the odd job alert which is not at all applcable to my CV, i have no idea why they were sending me those kind o jobs, so I unsubscribed from them. Here I found on one discussion that one of our friend told a site craigslist.com offer good opportunities around the world onlne and offline and the site is reliale. If yo are interested , just take a look if it helps anyway. bet of luck on your search!
