what is the difference between an amateur versus professional

If a government sponsors elite athletes in varying sporting discipline would that change their status from amateur to become professional?

I believe it would. An amateur is not aloud to profit at all on their sporting careers. Professionals on the other hand can make as much as they want.
I know each sport has different rules on this, so it would really depend on the sport. What sport are you referring to?
