I'm not - I adore meat and I'm for certain types of research that involve animals but I do feel for the animals. Chickens get their heads chopped off and run around for awhile afterwards, blood spurting from their heads. Unless they're slaughtered on a conveyor belt, in which case they're slaughtered upside down. Then their heads are sent through an electrified water trough - then cut off. And did you know least one out of every fifty eggs and one out of every three chickens sold in supermarkets are infected with live salmonella bacteria. Not to mention the growing epidemic for Avian Flu. Which, knock wood hasn't spread to the states too much. Cows stand in line to be slaughtered. They know what's happening - they can hear the screams. animals have been observed to be electrically shocked and battered. Without anesthesia, male pigs and cows are castrated. http://people.qualcomm.com/sriharid/info/vegetarianism/veg.html http://www.stephen-knapp.com/vegetarianism_recommended_in_Vedic_scripture.htm “He who permits the slaughter of an animal, he who cuts it up, he who kills it, he who buys or sells meat, he who cooks it, he who serves it up, and he who eats it, must all be considered as the slayers of the animal. There is no greater sinner than that man who though not worshiping the gods or the ancestors, seeks to increase the bulk of his own flesh by the flesh of other beings.” (Manu-samhita 5.51-52) I do know the bible says we have dominion over all animals. Dominion Over the Fish of the Sea, and Over the Fowl of the Air, and Over Every Living Thing That Moveth Upon the Earth Every Kind of Beasts, and of Birds, and of Serpents, and of Things in the Sea, Is Tamed, and Hath Been Tamed of Mankind. What's your stance? And why?

Again, this is why I have a problem with factory produced meat. My ex-hubby worked at the local plant...before they got their cheaper source of labor. His position if I understood it correctly waas at least 5 minutes "down the line" from where the cows were "shot". His job was to remove a portion of the leg, jab a hook in the remaining stump and hang the animal from that so the next person could remove the other leg. He often started to cut the leg only to have the animal kick. Sure he was told it was only nerves but...why did they remove the animal from the line and shoot it again? And I don't even mean little twiches,I'm talking all out kicks that left bruises and once broke a rib! I don't think I could totally give up meat but I do intend to be more and more animal friendly about it. Sometimes animals do need to be used for meat but it can be done humanely. Chickens and eggs can be raised and bought locally from small family farms here so there isno reason for me to suppor the chicken industry. Milk is something I have an issue with. I like milk and drink a lot of it. But I also don't like what I've seen about mechanical milking or tha much of the cost of milk is going to people other than the farmers who raise the cows. A few places around here will sell milk straight from their tank before the truck picks it up. It is drastically cheaper but harder to come by.

The job with one of the highest turnovers is in slaughter houses. Sounds like you've thought this whole issue thru. Hey was your post on why you don't eat meat from a factory near you - because the workers don't get paid a lot which narrows down who will accept the job here? Because I don't see it...

Nope that was on 101 reasons to go vegetarian...but I was referring to the same place in both.
