How can they afford to give it away for free?

I'm always seeing these sites online that are giving away free My Lot profiles and avatars and other cool stuff to dress up your profile page. And, I was wondering, how can these sites afford to give such expensive things away for no cost? Are they secretly installing spy ware onto your system when you download their freebies?
