Have you seen one of your favorite actors/actress play a role that surprised you?A role where that didn't fit their image? The one that comes to mind is Eric Roberts in It's my party.Eric usually plays either insane or the bad guy or both. He has a gun and is trying to kill everyone, but in It's My Party he plays a gay artist who is dying of AIDS.This character isn't insane and wouldn't know what to do with a gun and he is great. It is my favorite role of his.

There are two movies that quickly come to mind, although the actors aren't favourites! The first is Robin Williams in 'One hour photo', where he plays a psycho, and then there's the original 'Posiedon Adventure', where Leslie Nielson plays a small part a captain of the ship! When I see a commedian in a serious role, I keep waiting for them to come out with a joke!

It seems like most comedians make great dramatic actors.

I agree, I didn't really like him in this movie, didn't suit him, and as you say, the movie itself was quite predictable!

Jim Carey I think does well when outside of his normal comedy range. Eternal Sunshine on the Spotless Mind and Man on the Moon were excellent examples.

If you like Jim Carey in a non comedy role, you should see Doing Time On Maple Drive.it is a drama about a family and one son has a secret. that is all I can tell you without giving away plot.Net Flix it.

Mind you I do not think an actor playing a homosexual would be considered a good role unless one shows the danger of that lifestyle. But many actors do stretch themselves and do not play to type. That is probably why television shows are canceled, because the leading actor finds that people are associating him with the role of the hero. I have watched the old movies on TCM and have seen one actor, D *ick Powell, who was a handsome leading man singer who switched to playing hard-boiled detectives such as Philip Marlowe. I also saw how Angela Langsbury could switch from playing a Philistine girl in "Samson and Delilah", to the evil manipulated woman in "The Manchurian Candidate", the housemaid in "Gaslight" and then went on to play the lead in "Murder She Wrote." The mark of a good actor is his or her ability to play any part.

There are many good roles where an actor is playing a gay character. Not all gay movie and shows on t.v. or movies has to be an AIDS story. I have seen great dramas, comedies and romantic comedies where most the characters are gay and they weren't AIDS- stricken.I do agree it is up to both the audience and the actor to accept the actor in a different setting. It is up to the actor to break out and try something different and the audience to see the actor in his /her new role.

I think that people know what they are good at, and it just doesn't fit most of the time when they are out of their genre of acting. But when they try something different, you can almost garantee they are out of ideas, and despirite. LOL The movie that comes to mind for me was One hour Photo too. The whole movie I was just waiting and waiting for Robin Williams to do something funny. Didn't happen.LOL Another one that somes to mind is Punch Drunk Love with Adam Sandler. Not a very funny movie to start with, and he just plays this depressed boring guy. Not him he is always so happy and funny.

I can see if a star isn't a true actor he is just an comedian and he tries to do dramatic work. That would be bad. But what I was talking about is a true actor who has been typed casted finally gets to try something else and he/she is great. Robin Williams is an actor who is funny.Eddie Murphy is an comedian who can act.True Eddie could try to do some dramatic role but it may not be good. While Robin Williams can and has been great in dramatic roles. It is the public that helps to type cast these fine actors. They become a star doing the same hing and they never get to do something else.
