How to prevent your dog from attacking your cat.

My younger dog is very territorial and hates to see the cat lying down by the porch. He is okay as long as the cat stays in her small deck. Yesterday, he attacked the cat and thank God that I was there to hold him back and prevent him for hurting her. How can you teach a dog to stop acting so aggressive towards your cat? Anyone has a similar situation or has any ideas to prevent this from happening again. I love the two of them and they both mean a lot to me.

In most instances that I have ever seen where a Cat and Dog live together either the cat will swat the dog in the face which usually will deter the Dog from bothering the Cat or Kitty will take off like a bat out of h*ll and the dog learns to give up the chase.
