Death penalty - good or bad?

Tell me what you think... I think it's good - gets criminals off the planet, saves over $50,000 per year, per criminal and overall makes the world a better place. But wait - before you talk about 'life is important' etc., remember... the $50,000 you spend keeping a dangerous criminal (i.e. serial rapist, serial child molester, psycopathic murderer) in prison is $50,000 you DON'T spend giving children the healthcare they need to live, is $50,000 you DON'T give to a senior citizen who needs major surgery, is $50,000 you DON'T give to a bright student who can't afford university. So no matter what you pick - death penalty or no - you're killing someone. Just in the one case it's a convicted criminal (who may or may not actually be guilty) and in the other it's an innocent child (who is definitely not guilty). Seems pretty cut-and-dry for the death penalty to me, but lemme know what you think... :)
