Is Annulment/Divorce/Separation the Last Resort for an Ineffective Marriage?

I'm not yet married, but I am just curious if there's other way around that a couple could do when their marriage life isn't working already. As for me, this maybe one of my great fears - to have a broken family. I met a lot of people who are products of broken family and some are suffering from this kind of decision. Legally I think these three - Annulment, Divorce, Legal Separation have differences, but the effect to the children has no difference.
