Why do people like gossips?

I have noticed that people like gossips. Do you think it is a natural behavior? Because it happens not only in the third world countries but also in the first world countries? Take a look magazines, newspapers, internet, etc. More than 50% of those articles are related to gossips. Do you think if people don't gossip, the world is getting better?
