When you see an ant, what do you do?

Back in the day before I had a little kid, I would let an ant go on his or her way. Sometimes I would even let ants go about their business in my house, as long as they didn't bite me. I figured that they were part of nature and most likely just doing their job, so why bother them. But, that was before I found out that little kids and ants don't mix. Now, I have to exterminate any ants that get into my house or they end up everywhere. Where we live it's almost impossible to avoid ants, so you have to get rid of them right away or prepare for a swarm. What do you do when you see an ant? Do you squish it or get out the can of bug spray?

Ant - A normal ant
Since one month we were suffering from Ants. They have encroached every corner of our house and even made their way to our groceries. So day before yesterday my wife bought an ant killer medicine and now we are very much relaxed. Thank you for starting a discussion related to a present situation of my house..

Its a chemical stick. We have to just draw lines with it where normally ants are seen inside our house.

It seems we have the same feeling on little insects and animals. I do dont kill them, I just shoved them away, as I believe they are creatures like us, but those red ants that bite me i sweep them away. My kid also dont want ants, when she saw ants she will really wipe them out, sprinkle with water and anything just not to let her see those ants. But you know what they are one of the most exciting and interesting creatures on earth, imagine their group and keeping all the food for their own and saying hello to anyone whom they met along the way, awesome.

If I see an ant,I will let it go.As we all know, ant is too small while we are to "huge" to it.So,it is unfair to kill it.I think everything has its right to survive.

it depends on what kind of ants it is... if its the black one... then its fine as long as it wont get into my body... but if its the red one... ill kill it right away... its painful when they bite and super itchy.. i hate it coz i still have a scars from ants bite...when i was kid i used to play under a palm tree with a grass... you cant see the ants coz they are small... i only noticed when they bite me already, its painful and itchy... untill now i have the scars and i hate it... so everytime i saw ants i make sure ill kill them first before they bite me lol

Well I live in Indonesia, so I rarely see ants in my house but when I see one I'll just sweep them out of the house.

I would rather have ants around my little kids than bug spray. My prejudice, I guess, but I feel the spray is more harmful than the ant. When I was newly married and lived in San Diego the ants would cut through my trailer. I used bug spray then. I found their trail, and I would wipe down the outside of he trailer then spray their trail outside the house. They literally would walk up the outside, in at the front corner of the kitchen, across the end of the trailer, out the other side and down the outside. I did have some move into my steam iron and my steam electric curlers once, that was not a pleasant odor, when I turned the appliances on. Less toxic ways of dealing with ants are 1. Wipe counters and appliances with white vinegar. 2. Place a sprinkling of baby powder across their trails. They will not cross it, or salt because that polishes off their exoskeleton and they dehydrate. 3. Put mint leaves in your staple goods. Mint also deters mice. I try to avoid bug spray because I poisoned myself once, treating an insect problem, then getting it on my skin by walking through the dried spray barefoot. Mostly I let ants and other crawlies alone.

I like you have a HUGE ant problem and I have to keep on my toes keeping the house exterminated for them. We use some sort of power stuff (hubby does it) around the outside of the house and it keeps them down. We live with a wooded area attached to our back yard.

give me snakes & spiders any day but ants you can keep i have always freaked out about ants, now having children i have to be careful not to have a hissy fit when i see ants so i don't pass my fear onto my children, so if that means sitting on the grass with my children having a picinic i grit my teeth without reacting, let me tell you its hard. but i don't kill them i do ensure all benches are clean etc so they don't appear

I use a repellent to keep ants out. Its barely an issue though. There are times I've spared spiders and ants and getting them out and on there way does have some difficulty, but its worth it.
