Could this be Related to my Depression or Other Mental Illness at all?

Well I feel a bit silly for even asking this, but I'm desperate and would appreciate anyone with similar experiences to share with me. Sometimes when I get really anxious/depressed or feeling mentally unstable, I hear this electricty type of noise in my head (that's the best way I can describe the sound). Has anyone else experienced this or heard anything about it? By the way, I'm no longer on pills so it couldn't be related to that...

Yep. They are "brain shocks" and happen pretty often to people. Sometimes people see a light along with the sound. Lots of times it is from withdrawing from SSRIs but sometimes it is for no real reason. If you hear noise then it could be "exploding head syndrome" which is a real syndrome where people hear real loud noise and feel a funny shock, usually while falling asleep. The zaps you seem to be referring to are brain zaps or brain shocks and, according to everything I ever read and was told, are harmless. I would mention it to your doctor just in case but if they just zap and go and you don't get dizzy or feel disoriented after, they're another symptom of intense anxiety. I get them now and then and hate them. They don't hurt or anything but no one likes that feeling. I told my doctor and he explained what I did to you. If you recently went off SSRIs or even within the last 3 months, that is a withdrawal symptom and is VERY common. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain_zaps Good luck! Patty

Your information was very helpful, I've been off medication for over a year now so I don't think it's from withdrawl of that..I suppose it's just intense anxiety.

You really need to go to the Dr.'s and get medication for this problem it does sound like depression, and if you don't get it treated it could get worse. So please call your Dr. and make an appointment and get medication before it is to late you don't want any more problems than you are already having, and I have seen people end up with really bad problems from depression going untreated.

Don't feel silly..I have had this before and it was caused by my depression..I suffered with nerves/ depression for years...Currently i am taking my meds but at one time before i knew, i had these same symptons...I would also get an uncontrollable shaking like i was cold but it was just the inside of me,i would shake like crazy..and could not stop...It would be like a noise in my head, like a buzzey , thing..it was my depression on overload...I do not have that now(thank God) i got meds and it has not done that since...

i suffer from stress and anxiety from time to time but i have only had like a ringing sound in my ears that i think eveyone gets. ive never heard of anyone hearing a loud sound in there head but stress can cause all sorts of phisical symptoms like chest tightness and stomach upset and dizzyness so maybe its just a symptom of stress but if your worried about it go chat to your doctor im sure he will be abel to tell you more.

I do not know much about this symptoms. But, sometimes when I close my eyes, I see something like a lightning type for a second and then it's gone. I feel that is normal. If you seriously feel something wrong, please consult a doctor. Take care.

Do you by chance have any kind of Sensory Integration Disorder? My son suffers from SID as well as bipolar and anxiety disorders. When he has an anxiety attack or becomes very manic he has problems with things like this. He has even asked me to turn off the lights and every thing in the house because he can hear the electricity moving in the walls. SID causes your senses to work against each other instead of with each other like they normally would. He also has severe problems with the feeling of certain fabrics, buttons on pants, elastic waist bands, and foods that are not just the right consistency and smell when he begins to go into mania or has anxiety attacks. Just an idea, but I know he did describe hearing the electricity as well.

honestly, i have kind of a thumping sound only in my right ear when i'm having an anxiety attack, or very very stressed. it's like my brain is thumping against my head sorta...it's the strangest thing. but i don't think i can say it's like an electricity type of noise, but i do get the weird kind of thumping...maybe kind of a throbbing? our poor brains! ha...i HATE stress and depression...you certainly are not alone in that anyway...but i hope the electricity type feeling isn't something else. i'm curious to see what everyone writes.

Well even i was same, but later i realised crying over problems is not going to make any change. Rather, i decided to fight against problems and now i feel great.
