I Need Another Word

I'm trying to think of a word I can use to describe the sound of a cat, and by cat I mean like a lion or tiger. I don't want to use 'scream' because I justed used it in the previous sentence, and I'm not sure I like 'roar' for it. Can anyone think of any other words I could use? Thanks.

How about either snarl or growl? Maybe to add to it, a rumbling snarl, or rumbling growl?

I don't think I can use...because, the animal that is...making the sound, is large and frightening. I don't think it will be so scary, if it says "The two men beaside him raised their spears, a loud meow froze them." lol. I don't think it works X.X But thanks for the responses! =P

Well, roar would be the first word I'd think of. If you're looking for a soiund that's notas loud as that, I guess 'growl' would describe it. Those are really the only words I can think of to describe the noises a lion or tiger wouild make.

well it def. isn't meant to be quiet, i was actually going to use 'loud' as an adjective with it lol. But if I can't think of anything else I probably will be using roar.

How does the word "bellows" sound ?

Well...it's hard to explain. It's like a deep...shout. I'm using it to describe how a deer sounds, but bears can also bellow. Most animals bellow, it's like a roar...but isn't always necessarily angry or anything...hard to explain lol. Maybe someone else can do a better job at it than me =P
