How to set up a blog?

I would like to begin blogging but I really want to have my own domain rather than using a site like blogger or blogspot. I believe that in the long run it will give me more control. I think it will also allow me to earn more money from the blog. I also want to use it as a professional portfolio. Can anyone give advice about how to go about starting a blog from scratch?
