Cricket and Hockey in India

September 27, 2007 11:52am CST
Recently the Indian Hockey team members expressed their dismay that the Government has not recognized their efforts or given them the credit they deserved for their victory in Asia Cup (when compared the reception given to cricket team). The cricket team that received all the praises received brick bats when they exited the World Cup in the first round. All the players entered the country like thieves (for fear of attacks) and security was provided to them. Our Hockey team was a regular loser in many tournaments and no one spoke ill about them. Hockey players should not express their dismay like this in public. The public loves cricket more than hockey.

may be you are right they should have remained silent in the public but atleast donot you think that the game which made india proud for may years a long duration even when we did not had shoes to play even when their were no financers even when we were under the rule of some othe country which is the national game of india we should give some more respect and attention to it still now only a fraction of amount we spend on cricket is invested on hockey people

I am not a hockey player but I feel hurt when people and Govt discriminate between games. Govt should give equal recognition to every game played in India. Can we attribute the loss in hockey to players only? Is Govt not responsible for it? And is our cricket team win all their matches? Why then give VIP treatment to cricket? I join hockey players to express dismay that Govt has not recognized hockey team efforts or given credit for their victories.

But you should also compare the payment that cricketers and hockey players are getting. It is nowhere near what these over-hyped cricketers are getting when compared to hockey players. The payment for one goal is only Rs. 1000/- but if they concede a goal they will deduct Rs. 2000/- from them. This is really a very pitiable condition for them when compared with cricketers who are earning in lakhs no matter how bad they perform. That’s also one of the reason why people are very angry with them when they perform badly. I personally feel that cricket has totally crushed other sports in our country and this lopsidedness should be stopped and all other sports should also be given equal opportunities, else we will be left with only cricket in our country.
