In most places, electricity is more expensive than water. Water is after all abundant in most countries with larger land mass but in Singapore, I heard that water costs more than electricity. Would you happen to know why is this so?

Hello irajohann, Water in Singapore is a scarce and precious resource. Being a small island state with an increasing demand for water, Singapore has to make every drop of water count. As ironic as it can be, even though Singapore is surrounded by water, water scarcity is a major problem in the country. That's why water in Singapore is much more expensive. The country is only self-sufficient with half of the total amount of water they need for survival because on the supply side they lack large rivers plus the occasional dry spell. The country does not many water catchment areas. With the countries growing population and developing industrial sector they are having a hadr time meeting water demands. So they are buying water from neighbouring countries for additional supply of water.

Among the countries in southeast asia, Singapore has one of the most advanced technology. It is actually the petroleum hub and biotech hub in Asia. Why not invent a contraption that will convert sea water to freshwater since sea water is very much abundant in the country? Have you ever heard of a news pertaining to any technological solution/action by Singapore?

In Singapore water is expensive, not sure if it is more expensive than electricity. From what I know during my last visit in Singapore, water from singapore comes from malaysia. That is one of the reason why water is expensive in Singapore. However gasoline is much more cheaper in Malaysia than in Singapore.
