I've seen many wonderful games not get a hint of popularity when they were just.. so very extraordinary! What really makes a game so popular anyways?

A few factors go into what would make me play a game. First would be the type of game(RPG, RTS, FPS, etc), second would be the story. The story that the game tells is very important to me. If all I notice through a game is that I'm mashing buttons and I have no interest in what happens to any character at all(including the protagonist of the story), then I lose interest very quickly.
Next would be the system of play for the game. While I don't like just button mashing in a game, I like even less having to read three pages in a manual in order to under stand how to do just one thing. I'm in the imbetween. To simple and you limit what can be done in a game, to complicated and you limit what you can understand what you can do in a game.
Last, would of course, be graphics. While graphics aren't a complete necessity, you can only be interested so long just watching a couple of stick figures go at it.

I would say that it is popular because a lot of people like it.
People are funny sometimes and tastes vary as to what we like.
I have seen movies that have gotten raves reviews that I didn't like at all.... and I have seen those that did badly in the reviews that I thought were great.
Games are the same way, just like everything else.
