are their any local projects to help save the environment?

In Totnes (U.K.) there is a return to promoting the cycle as the everyday means of transport. (The car is saved for very special, and occasional outings). Also there is an initiative to improve the range of everyday household items able to be bought from local shops/market stalls, and they have launched their own currency. These type of schemes seem to me to be the way forward because of the positive impact they have on global warming. Do any of you have examples of any local schemes designed to preserve the planet? Please let me know
