What is the function of movie clapboard?

I often see movie producers to use a movie clapboard when they created a movie. What is the function of it? Some movie clapboards have digital numbers. Do you know what for is it?

The movie Clapperboard is to designate the scene and the takes for that particular scene. It's to synchronize the picture and the sound. Each take starts with the clapperboard, with the scene and the take number on it. So that when they are putting the film together in the end they know what to use. No film is ever filmed in the correct order.
