America: A Nation of Cheaters?

While watching the tearful admission to having used steroids made by Marian Jones, I started wondering. It seems that these kinds of admissions have become a regular occurrence in regards to people that we have held in high regard. The alarming fact is that this cheating mentality is not limited to people in sports. It is rampant in so many areas. There are spouses cheating on one another, politicians cheating the citizens out of services they need, school cheating. It just goes on and on! I wonder if we have always been a nation of liars and cheaters or if this is just a passing thing. Share your feelings on this subject, please.

There are millions of people on this planet that are hard-working, loyal, honest, loving and caring people. Unfortunately, the media focus on the "bad boy/bad girl" stories. On any day, you can hear the same gruesome stories played over and over again on all the news programs. The sports programs that were started to encourage excellence, teamwork, friendship and the "mom and apple pie" values are corrupted all the way down to the little league level. If our sports figures or entertainment personalities were just regular people, their bad behavior would be punished by friends, family and society. Instead, we allow them to be idiots and glorify them in the process. I often think that if everyone canceled their reservations at the Hilton hotel, maybe her dad would have something responsible to say to miss Paris. The list goes on and on. Until we just say no more and stop spending our money on these goof balls, punish cheating politicians by not voting for them, get discipline back into our schools and our lives in general, we won't see much improvement. In the meantime, if we try to keep the golden rule and honor the good people of the world instead of honoring the bad ones, we will all be better off.

One plus one equals two... multiply by a thousand and we are getting somewhere. The best part of this site is that we find out that we are not alone. Together we can move mountains and make a difference!

You make some good points, surfette, but I don't think the fact that I d refuse to patronize these people is going to put even a tiny dent in the problem. I often wonder who glorifies these people, certainly not me. That is why I spend my money on good reading material and an occasional movie rather than buying music that is filthy, over-priced tickets to sports events, or tickets to see movies that glorify these idiots.

I don't think this is limited to just the US. I believe this has become a problem every where. I know people that actually think things are not illegal until you get caught, and they use that to justify the things that they do. I think that is what our politicians think as well, and that is in both parties.

Cheating is unfortunately a global issue. People cheat because they are greedy and we can't help but be greedy when everyday we are bombarded by messages telling us that we need to get more of this and that and if we fail to reach certain economic goals in life we are just a bunch of loosers. This is especially true in sports where big money has moved into areas which were once part of the "Amateur Ideal" Temptation is strong

I realize that we have not cornered the market when it comes to cheating, Destiny, but it is still no less disheartening. And, it's true that people will find any reason whatever to justify their behavior.

The only thing one can do is to be faithful to one's self. In this regard, we would not be joining the crowd of cheaters. You cannot control what others do or if they cheat. In any event, the cheater cheats no one but his/herself as it is impossible to cheat another. The recipient of the cheating always has other options to chose as to how they look at the cheater. Does this make sense?

I do not agree with a few of your statements. That is the biggest problem, that the poor see themselves as victims. That is the mentali5ty that keeps them poor. They, as much as anyone have free use of their thoughts and minds and therefore have everyone reason to believe they can change their way of life. True, that some rich people have cheated or greeded their way to the top. But that is hardly true of the vast majority. Most have made the efforts and plowed forward to achieve what they have achieved. Most of them have used ideas and thoughts to create vast wealth, which is a process available to most of us. All of the worlds vast riches are the result of someone's ideas and thoughts put into practical use. You can never be cheated for very long if you persist in your thinking and creating from your ideas.

I can't say that I totally agree with you, sigma, but you are right in that we should always remain true to ourselves. I disagree with the part that the cheaters are hurting no one but themselves. I see it everyday. People constantly complain about the burden of caring for the poor, when, in fact, the poor are just as much victims as anyone else. The greedy people who make the most money are the ones who also do the most stealing and cheating. There is no way this can be right.

we are a nation of humans and humans sin it does not happen just here and i personaly resent your implication that we are a nation of cheaters i prefer to think of us as a nation of people who are not afraid to speak up and ask for forgiveness when we realise we did wrong just as the recent ms Jones did !God bless her she must be going through a personal hell right now but she is forgiven by God if not by men!

You may resent me all you like, rev, but the facts are there for anyone with eyes to see. It has become something of a broken record to constantly see these tearful apologies when the guilty parties had full knowledge that what they were doing was wrong. You see it your way-I see it mine. Not everyone who utters the words, "I'm sorry," actually is. I, for one, refuse to be duped by these morally deficient idiots who are crazy to think their sins won't find them out anyway.

How right you are; I guess that's why you're the "worldwise1", right...lol? I don't know who kids today can look up to as a role model. The "best" baseball player was using steroids, our gold-medal winners and our Tour-de-France winner, the list goes on and on. A top football player apparently needed more money than the millions he gets from his team so he has to participate in torturing innocent dogs! Our politicians are lining their pockets while cheating their constituents, teachers are seducing their students, the list goes on and on into infinity it seems. I don't think it's always been this way but, who knows? The world is a smaller place now and we hear things we never heard before so maybe it's just now out in the open. Great topic! Annie

Yes, anniepa, it is very disheartening to think of how long that list is. I don't know what happened to having ethics and morals. It would seem that they are in short supply for so many these days. I, too, can imagine the damage this is causing to our younger generation. Of course they will try to take short cuts if they continue to see the elite in our society do these things.

It is bad when anyone at all cheats, Ajicha. People have lost their morals and self-respect.

It seems to get worse and worse over time. I have personally observed students cheating in college--we caught 50 students cheating on a lab assignment. I have caught others cheating in other classes. They have gotten away with it in high school and think its okay to cheat in college. Its a comment on how morals are degrading in this generation.
