78 days til X-Mas. Woohoo :)

This week i went out shopping with my daughter and we saw the first x-mas decorated shop. I had to go in there. It was a card/gift/craft shop and i got all exited walking round in there. Until i started to look at the prices of the stuff. When i said to Mette, this is bloody pricy, she said: you said the same thing last year dad. Hmm :P Though you could make a discussion just about the price of x-mas this is not what this discussion is all about lol. When i got home i found myself in a weird mood. I have learned to love x-mas time and the tradition and history of it, and my house will always be timely decorated for the seasson. But never before at the earlieat the 4th sunday before x-mas. Usually it is this process of decorating and the looks of it, that awakens my x-mas spirit. I have always thought it is redicilous how the commercial lunatism of x-mas starts earlier year by year, and usually i am fed up with this weeks before x-mas is there. Same with the music, they start play it in radio shops restaurants all over the place. But this year i feel very different about it. I think i realized other day that i have come into some kind of pre-mature x-mas spirit. I simply had to find the candles (think i had 25 lit arround my lounge and put one of my fav, Boney M's x-mas album in the hi-fi. Mette came in at some point to see what was happening. She loved it and stayed in my company for almost an hour, talking about x-mas and what we will do this year. Now what is the concerning part of this story is: I am for the first time in my life mentally ready for x-mas in the beginning of October. Some years i did not even to manage to catch it before x-mas has gone. Could many years of commercial subconcious brainwash and indoctrination finally have got the better of me? Is that a possibility? Is this ole rebel finally conforming? Scarry thought. PS. Worse thing about it is that i actually feel good about it :)

we'll that's for sure! the commercialization of Christmas indeed has given an ugly different meaning to it. but I guess its just a matter of our own perspective. I mean, if we let them affect us, we will be affected. if we ignore them, we won't be affected. ^__^ but I also know that we can't simply ignore it. however, the Christmas spirit will always be there no matter what happens because there are people we love and who love us. we have our family and friends, lovers and officemates, even a simple gesture of kindness to the less fortunate ones can inspire us to feel the Christmas spirit. ^__^ simple appreciations can make us feel good. its 43 days before Christmas and I have just recently put up our Christmas tree over the weekend. But I have already started sending out Christmas cards a week before that. LOL I have also started shopping for Christmas gifts for my godchildren and nieces and nephews. all these to make people happy and enjoy Christmas. ^__^ Happy holidays kim!

Of course you are right in saying the x-mas spirit is in your heart sec. I think what I am worried about is the fact that all the commercial hype about x-mas has changed the original values of x-mas, and with the competition of a billion $ business I do not stand a chance, with regards to my kid or kids of friend and family, to continue the tradition of x-mas as I value it the most. Thanks for your response Sec, and happy holidays to you too.

in our case we go visit family and eat out at christmas time, because that's the time of the year when everybody seems to be in holiday mood and think about family gathering. I used to help decorate xmas tree when I was very young but after a while I started to skip church and not much involved in christmas celebration anymore. I still believe God exists but that he doesn't belong to one religion and Dec 25 was not the exact date of His son's birth. can't say much about the retail side, I own a shop myself :):) but if these stores are in the mall, they do charge more because they have to pay staffs and lease plus high inventory cost since they buy bulk. not trying to defend them, just what I think.

Actually Mel, you are right about the 25th not being the birthday of Jesus Christ, he was bor late in the evening of the 24th. That is the reason why we in Scandinavia celebrate x-mas on x-mas eve. I'm not a particular Christian person though I do have my beliefs, I just don't think that we have the single right to decide on religious faith as the one and only. Whether you call the power Jesus, God, Buddha or Mohamed is not as important as it is to have faith. But what this discussion is all about is all the commercial hype surrounding the celebration of x-mas. Focus has been changed from Jesus to Rudolf and Santa, and with this i feel a lot of the x-mas spirit has been lost and will never be the same.

I was in the Columbus Mall beginning of October and they already had the Christmas decorations and I know how you feel. I always thought it was because the prices were so high that they had to get people starting to use their credit cards early, ,starting to save for the gifts, or putting a deposit on them so no one else would take them and they needed the whole three months to pay it all off so they would not get that very large bill in January. Me, it is having to make cookies, and shortbread, and also buying the stuff for making all the Christmas goodies, and my husband does not like paying money on fancy ingredients so I have to use my own money. And Superstore does not sell the dark Christmas cakes, and we shop there now.

Does he like to eat the cake? Well i rather go spend money on fancy ingredients than buy a cake triple the price and then not knowing what is in it. Thanks for your response :)

We have had stores with Christmas stuff in them since back to school supplies came out in August. So I get pretty sick of it. I usually put out the decorations at the earliest 4 weeks til xmas too. But only cause the kids like it. I have already picked up a few gifts for the kids too. I love the actually night before and morning of xmas but really could lump everything else. As for you I think you have a case of Commercial Subconscious Brainwashing (or CSB for short) and you should sue!

Hahaha Vic. And who would I sue? Santa Claus or Rudolf? Lol. No I entirely agree with you x-mas evening and morning is very special times. Everything is so quiet. You can really feel the whole world is having a break. I also like the lighting and decoes but all the commercial stress of x-mas I can easily do without too. Its certainly not Santa or Rudolf who gave me the case of CSB :) Season greetings, lol

So true galo. Plus the fact that you lose out on some valued time with the family doing it yourself. Making x-mas deco and candy was a very big part of my childhood x-mas.

The city I work in already has wreaths up on lamp posts and that was before Halloween. Now, I might be ready for x-mas in time, but I could end up a drained mess with work and all the things going on. I might just set up a couple of things early so I don't have to fiddle with them later. I'll agree some new things are getting a bit pricer, I noticed with autumn related decorations. Sigh... As for music, I only got in the mood for it because I read this thread. I was just fine before it

Music and my good old fashioned and handmade deco's is what gets me in the spirit. Not the commercial lunacies. I went shopping in one of our huge supermarkets on Monday. They spend weekend to decorate the store. The deco was that overwhelming as you walked throught the door, you fel run over by Santa on his sleigh. Greetings :)
