Okay...I am sitting here at my desk trying to figure out how to make some window shades that would act as a barrier against the cold....i need them so I can pull them up to let the sun in during the day but at night and cloudy days I would like to close them to help keep the cold out. Any ideas would be appreciated...Any ideas on how to heat a home for less would be greatly appreciated also... Oil is just about $3 a gallon here and I go through about 500-600 gallons a heating season.. I am ready to put the wood stove in but dh hasn't gotten to that point YET...

as for material for these windows, have you ever thought about using the cotton drop sheets that painters use? they are very large and thick cotton and stand up to alot (we use them for covers for our couches!) and they wash very well!

Depends if you want to spend money or not. If you have some spare blankets... or even bed sheets... but the blanket is better for insulation... just nail a blanket over your window. Two nails will do it. You just pull the blanket of one nail during the day. And find the hole left in the blanket to put it back over the nail at night. As for heating the house... covering all the windows will most definitely help. Then check for any gap around the doors and windows which might let the cold air in when it is windy. Don't heat up the rooms that you don't use. Close the doors. If you don't have a door... hang a blanket across the doorway like you did for the window. Get the room where you spend the most time to your favourite temperature and have the others a bit colder. Learn to wear clothes to keep you warm rather than relying on the heater. Get the wood stove in. But unless you can find your own wood... firewood is not cheap either.
