Being a gay partner. How do you define your role?

I play a huge role in being a gay partner. As a lesbian I am very committed to my girlfriend. I have no children as yet (though I hope to in the future) and am not entitled to enter a legal partnership under Irish Law at present (thankfully this is soon to change!) Are you a married partner? Are you also a parent? How do you find you manage balancing your roles?
