How do I fix my sound problem?

The sound for my- Windows XP "Desktop Stereo Speakers"- does not work! Everything is connected properly. I've analyzed the problem using the help and support center's troubleshooter, and still couldn't solve it! My speakers can't play system sounds; the volume settings are on an audible level; my speakers are connected correctly; the sound device is turned on, and Windows is configured to use it; all the drivers are already digitally signed; there is no hardware device conflict; and finally, I've already checked if the sound device is compatible. Everytime I view the devices' property sheets, Windows displays: "This device is working properly." Well . . . It either is, or it isn't. Everything seems to be fine, but there's still something wrong. I had my system completely erased, and was able to retore the essentials, except for sound. Is there anyone out there that can help me with this? (I'm not very fluent in computer lingo and hardware nomenclature; so- if you could, please give it to me in layman's terms).
