Have you ever faced racism?

Racism Everywhere??? - How amusing is this photograph. But if you look at it from other point of view, how touching it looks.

I am working in a call centre in India and represent one of the biggest telecom giant in the UK. I often get calls from customer who curse Indians as if its our fault if something goes wrong with their services. From last couple of months, I am going through utter depression because of this. I would like to know about views of other people. People who are working in call centres or are in other fields...

i dont intend implicating any community by what i am going to say. i am simply stating what i have experienced. i was at Bath two summers ago, as an exchange student and spent some time there studying culture and societal differences. one the last day of my stay there i was at a store that sold handbags and accessories..and i was looking around in the store. i was the only non white in there. and suddenly the buglar beep thing at the entrance of the store began to buzz...very loudly. i was INSIDE the store...and still only looking...but every single person in that store was GLARING at me. i was appalled. so i just left. id like to add here that i try and be as unbiased as i can, but throughout my stay in london, calne and bath...there were several times i felt that i was bieng looked upon by a popular racial stereotype. what really left me bemused was the fact that a little boy at a feeder school in calne asked me ' do indians have ears?'

As an Australian and British Citizen that is currently living and working in India I may have a perspective on this..... Many Australians for example (and I am sure some British would feel the same)get frustrated to think that they call a local company help line to sort out a problem or make an inquiry and end up speaking to someone in India. It is perceived as not being as personal and ultimately jobs being taken away from locals. Fair or not, this is how it is sometimes seen and there have been news stories in Australia attesting to this promoting how companies outsourced to India and how unfair it is etc. We are all influenced by media to some extent! I actually find it very amusing myself! I have all my accounts etc back in Australia and when I call the Australian help lines from Bombay for American Express for example; I am dialing an Australian number yet I am talking to an Indian call centre in Hyderabad or Bangalore! It would be so much cheaper and easier if i could call them directly here in India no? LoL. I can imagine how frustrating it must be and I can honestly say from experience that call centre work can be tough and it takes great composure to do it well; regardless of racism being part of the equation or not. Try not to take it personally and try to remind yourself regularly of those people you talk to that DO treat you with the respect you deserve. Best of luck.

For me, people who are rascists are ignoramus, rigid, self-opinionated and inflexible. I cannot remember of any personal experience, but have read them only in the papers, in TV's, in the internet, etc. Of course, our latest taste of rascism was when Teri Hatcher of Desperate Housewives (this show is really desperate) made some rascist remarks which irked the millions of Filipinos worldwide. People who do this are insensitive and don't deserve our respect. If they wish respect, then they should respect first. It's just unfortunate that some of your customers fall under this type, and I could just imagine how difficult and annoying it is to deal with son-of-_____ such as them. Just be cool in dealing with these kind of people since in the last analysis, they are really the losers since they are showing how unprofessional they are....

you know that when people are not satisfactory with some services they are always angry, they could say any unfavorable words. so, as long as you choose that kind of job, maybe you should at first know such things may happen, and try to tolerate that. of course, i will never curse other people, and i object racism.
