The hamster is an animal . They want also to explore so if they got an oppurtunity to be free they would grab it. A hamster is a rat so once they get out the cage they will go in a hiden place. They want to dig hole and go inside of it. I testified it with my hamster they are very good in making holes. One day I forget to close my cage one of my hamster goes out good thing I found it sitting under our sofa. In your situation maybe your hamster already gone outside your house and can't find a way to come. It is also possible that your hamster was catch by a cat or big rat or other animals.

Where did you leave them unattended? Hamsters are curious critters and will climb out of their cage if it's left open.

I don't know what happened. But usually if they are left unattended they will tempt to leave. My hamster left her cage this morning, lucky for me to see her running across my living room and manage to get her back.
