how much counting of ramazan fasting do you believe? 30 or according to the moon? and why?

Are you muslum? Maybe you could answer something for me. I don't know much about fast myself. I find myself wondering how a person goes 30 days with out food, or is this simply a sun up to sun down fast? If someone who practices this faith could answer, I'd apreciate it :)
